MIDI Out on the roadmap?

Hi,

Just wondering if there are any plans to have this synth send midi out? The chord generation capabilities of Notes are pretty cool, and it would be a shame to have it restricted to the built-in synth sounds. I don’t see it sending MIDI Out yet, unless I’m missing something.

Also wondering if there’s a manual? I haven’t seen one. Though the community was made six days ago and the synth itself was only released very recently, so I’m assuming it’s under the ‘To do’

We’re going to do it 100% and it came up during testing….also tell all your friends about Notes if you like it.

The manual is also high priority. We’re also totally open to feedback on how it works, rather than preempting how people expect things to work we decided to release Notes, get feedback and then work out the best way to do things.

Also if you have any sounds that you want to see in there let us know that too!

Oh, awesome!
I actually opened this because I was planning to make a youtube video about it, and that (and how grooves really work) were my main confusion points. So I will be telling all my friends, after a fashion!

Not totally sure on any specific sounds I want that aren’t in there yet - I haven’t reached the limits of the built-in stuff [and still haven’t even gotten to play it with a keyboard, I’ve just been using my computer keyboard]. I do wish that there were more lofi presets but it’s more than easy enough to make my own.

But Notes makes me think of a midi version of Orchid, and it’s just fun

Hey @ifdots glad you’re having fun with Notes so far :folded_hands: We’re working on manuals, tutorials, etc. right now. In the meantime just let us know if you have any other questions!

I wasn’t sure whether I should make a new topic for this or not, but now that I’ve played it with my keyboard I’ve got a pack idea …
I think it would be really cool to have a degraded pack in there. Sort of a more digital flavor of lo-fi - everything in the plugin currently is either soft or very hi-fi. Usually I just put Digitalis on at the end to get that sort of flavor, but given how this plugin works it would also be nice to have some things with that sort of instability fully in the samples and not have to think too much about end-of-chain. And I haven’t found the current effects to provide that sort of flavor perfectly either (though maybe that’s just taste!).
I also would’ve loved more … directed lo-fi presets? Like, more sounds with the current instruments. It’s a bit odd to have Ghibli as a chord style, for instance, and then to not have a pack of presets explicitly using said style, or with Ghibli-type instruments like soft pianos and the like. It’s easy enough to make them from the provided instruments though, and it’s very nice to have the sounds just in there.

I’ve also noticed that the blob absolutely kills my CPU on both devices I have it on. If possible it would be nice to have a way to make it … do that … less, even if it makes the visual part of it less appealing. I’m just generally not using it right now, which is fine enough!

There all good ideas….do you reckon there are presets in the Notes Keys pack that work for Ghibili progressions? We can totally do a specific Joe Hisaishi style keyboards and pianos in its own pack.

On the blob…is it any blob in particular, like is there a certain pack that is causing the issue?

For the first thing: the muted keys/lofi key instruments/samples/etc. that are in Notes already work pretty well, especially when mixed with a more traditional keys preset. I’m missing a felt, but it’s not vital. Out of the lofi chords pack, this isn’t done logically or anything but I really like Flying a Kite. In Other Words is also good for the style. Quiet Place, Secret Garden, Silent Valley also sound good, just going through presets. But generally I think they mostly can lend themselves to the style well if you just set up an instrument properly for it. I just have the muted piano with some chorus/tape/vintage to taste.
For the blobs, honestly it was every blob. It seems better coming back to it today, though … haven’t been able to immediately replicate it. The VST in general is pretty heavy on my computer - through Live my m4 mac reports that just playing notes in it brings the CPU power used to mid-20%, assuming the effects slots/etc. are filled and active.
(Standalone doesn’t seem to have a place to select/change MIDI inputs either, but I assume that’s coming as well.)

For midi settings on standalone, that’s in the Options on the top bar here:

Ahh, thanks, that works!

Would like to double down on this feature request as well. If Notes can include midi-out to send to other devices this would turn from a fun instrument to a utility product (aka an essential to my workflow). looking forward to seeing this implemented!

@cjdanoy its ready to go…I’ll send you the download link once we have finished beta testing later today…

Also if you want to be added to the beta tester list can do that, just say the word!

I would also like a link to the download and added to beta testing

That’s awesome! I would be happy to be added to the beta tester list, thank you!

Question - I’ve created an NKS compatability pack for Notes. Do you have issues with me sharing this?

If you say no, I won’t. Thought it best to ask.

Nope not at all, in fact I’d encourage it!

Thanks,

Gavin.

Thanks @Gavin_FAW - I’ll finish the mapping mid-week and it’ll be ready to go. Thanks!

Ok @Shakacarnage , that is super helpful!

Sorry this took slightly longer - work was busier than I’d like.

Anyone can download this NKS Compatibility pack here.

What it has:
NKS1 support for Maschine and Komplete Kontrol users, including tagged presets, previews, artwork and database files, which work with Maschine 2+ and KK 2.9+ and 3.x+, supporting all NI Keyboards, and their third party partnerships.

Some mapping for sight impared users - so they can at least browse through core functions using compatible hardware. I’d need to spend a fair bit of time on it to do tens of pages to make this more advanced.

NKS 2 colour implemented (pretty).

What it doesn’t have:

NKS2 “Edit” functoinality - Using MK3 keybaords and NKS2, you can asssign mutiple pages to the edit button, and have context sensitive automations populated by page.

Every Automation Mapped. It’s a hands-on instrument, so to add the options for every possible insert and option would mean ridiculous numbers of pages.

Light-guide has to be done at code level.

What it could have:
If the dev team were able to allow assignment of automation for the “+ insert”, this would make the NKS2 implementation amazing. The tools for that aren’t available though, so you would need to work with Native Instruments for anything NKS2.

Thanks @Shakacarnage

Agree about added every parameter, we usually just do a couple of the main ones in SubLab.

It’s been a while since we were in contact the NKS team and I think a lot has changed there but I’ll reach and see what the latest SDK is and if we can get Notes approved.

Gavin.
